What does it mean to be data-driven or data-dependent? To get one into perspective we take an example of all living things. A simple case is a plant that is enclosed in a box that has a hole in it. In this case, the plant bends and adapts to get to where the light comes from hence we conclude that the plant needs light for optimal growth.

Similarly, Data-driven or Data-dependent means that for a technology to be viable and useful Data is needed. Let us give meaning to the term data-driven. Techopedia defines Data-driven as a process or activity that is spurred on by data, as opposed to being driven by mere intuition or personal experience. The decisions are made with reference to hard empirical evidence and not by speculation or gut feeling.

Introduction

Data-driven technology This is a technology that depends on data to make strategic decisions based on data analysis and interpretation. In some cases, data-driven technologies need semantic technologies. This is a technology that enables a machine to get meaning from data.

Here are some data driven technologies and fields.

Machine Learning

Machine Learning is the science of making a machine function/ behave as a human being does. In simple terms Machine learning, is the concept that a machine can learn from a given data-set without being programmed. The process of learning revolves around data. In this case, the different thing is that it’s a machine that is learning from the data we give it.

ML is a type of Artificial Intelligence that can extract patterns out of raw data by using algorithms or methods. Machine learning aims at making sense out of data in a similar manner that a human being does. ML is applied in the case of robots. A robot is given a set of data that has several terrains and the best way to move in every terrain. The robot analyses the data and gets to learn how to move about then gives possible suggestions.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) intelligence showed by a machine. A computer system/robot that can display behavior that is associated with intelligent beings. The intelligence of a machine is dependent on the data and how well a machine can draw insights from raw data.

A chatbot is an AI-based automated system that can do a conversation with a user in natural language via messaging apps, websites, and telephone. It operates within a defined set of rules and parameters. By using the data a chatbot can give the best response to a question. This is an indication that with data at hand we can achieve great results.

AI technologies can analyze pools of data, not only deciphering what’s there but also using this information to identify trends and highlight patterns to predict future behaviors and trends.

Data science

Data science is the study of data. It is the study of the extraction of information or knowledge from data. It involves the use of scientific methods, processes, analysis, algorithms, and systems to extract information from data and create insights. Data Science requires the usage of both unstructured and structured data. It is a multidisciplinary field that has its roots in statistics, mathematics, and computer science.

It is a process that involves numerous steps that enable us to make sense of the data we have. These several steps can turn raw, unorganized, meaningless data into an organized meaningful dataset that tells a story. You simply cannot have data science without data.

The Internet of Things

Did you know that Big data forms a backbone of the internet of things? IoT is dependent on the data to have the internet we need data.

It is a network of physical devices, digital machines, and other objects that allows for a smooth transfer of data over a network without any real-time interaction. It includes a wide variety of “smart” devices, from industrial machines that transmit data about the production process to sensors that track information.

Given that we are in the era of data most organizations today are using data in one way or the other. There is power in the data and organizations have adopted the use of data to power their businesses. IoT comes in and makes the process of data sharing easier.

The Internet

We cannot have the internet without Data. The internet is a system of interconnected computer networks that uses internet protocol suites. This network offers a platform for data sharing as well as a data creation platform. A simple browsing session creates a given amount of data.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology it is a decentralized, distributed ledger that records the provenance of a digital asset. A Blockchain is where the network participant validates the transaction so that the data stored is immutable and cannot be forged. In simple terms, this is a technology that consists of a chain of blocks not necessarily the common kind of blocks rather it is digital pieces of information that are stored in the form of blocks.
